Once Upon a Painting

…How it all began…My journey as an artist….

Years ago I was working as a freelance graphic designer. In my spare time I began serving on the Woodford Humane Society Board of Directors in Versailles, KY. The plight of the homeless animals touched my heart and I wanted to do more to help. “More” soon turned into a full-time, volunteer job for several years.

While still giving time to the Humane Society, but for a change of pace, I started taking oil painting classes at Plymale Gallery in Lexington, KY. Through the instructor, Betty Plymale, I learned so much about technique, color theory & rendering the figure. It was then that the animal lover in me began to show its furry little face in many of my paintings.

Although I had my beginnings in oils, I started dabbling in an old set of German pastels from the late 1800s that was gifted to me by a very dear friend and inspiration in so many ways, Mary Wood Brown (who lived to be 104, by the way!). I started with that old set and began buying a few new pastels, slowly adding to my pallet. The texture and spontaneity of pastels lend themselves well to a beautiful rendition of an animal’s fur coat.

My husband, Joe, and I spent our 20th anniversary in France where we visited the Sennelier art supply shop in Paris known for developing luscious shades of pastels which are famous the world over. Knowing how much I liked painting with the pastel medium, Joe surprised me with a complete set of 525 sticks. In 2006 I began painting full time in pastels, especially animals, my business took off and I’ve never looked back. In addition to animals, I also paint florals, still lifes, and landscapes, finding my inspiration throughout Kentucky and all over the country.
